Business Vision and Goal Setting

Image of business vision and goal setting. Do you have a vision for your business? Do you know what you're working towards?

Business Vision – do you have one?

“A vision is a vivid mental image of what you want your business to be at some point in the future, based on your goals and aspirations. Having a vision will give your business a clear focus, and can stop you heading in the wrong direction.” – Queensland Government.

Do you have a business vision? If you don’t have one, then how do you know what you’re working towards? Your business vision comes hand in hand with setting goals.

So what is the vision for your business? Is your vision to grow your business and build up a team? Is it to introduce new products or services? Is it to become the ‘go to’ expert in your field? And how does it make you feel? Are you happy? Successful?

How does your business vision impact on the quality of your life? Do you have a nice house and a nice car? Do you travel and see the world?

Jot down some relevant words that relate to your business vision. Or, better yet, use this business vision and goal setting worksheet I’ve devised to help you do this. Download the worksheet here.

It’s now time to get creative…

It’s time to actually create your vision. You could set up a secret board on Pinterest like I have and pin images of your vision there. Or you could go old school and go out and buy a pin board. Use magazines and cut out and pin to the board all the images that fit within your vision. Then have it on your wall so you can see your vision day in, day out.

Over time, your vision may change too, so remember to keep updating it so it spurs you on.

Goal Setting

Goal setting comes hand in hand with your business vision. You now need to plan out how to reach your vision and achieve everything you desire. I’ve worked with companies in the past that plan one to five years ahead. This can be overwhelming for a small business owner so I would recommend focussing on 3 months ahead.

Using the worksheet, keep it simple and concise. What three main areas of your business are you going to focus on over the next three months? It could be to launch a new service or write and publish more blog posts. It could be to develop a social media strategy to raise awareness and engagement. It could be to launch a new website. It could be anything at all. Once you decide which three main areas you’re going to focus on, break them down further. What tasks do you need to undertake to reach those three goals? Set a deadline against each one. You could even put the tasks in your diary and set reminders.

Now my top tip for the next part is… print it out. Print out the filled in worksheet and put it up on your wall. This will provide a constant reminder of what you’re doing. You will know exactly what it is you need to do to work towards achieving those goals.
