“How much does a logo design cost?” is a bit like saying, how long is a piece of string.
Every graphic designer has their own individual design process along with their own level of skill and experience. It’s the same in any field of expertise and with any desirable skill.
Yes, there are logo design sites out there where you can get a logo designed for a very affordable price, but your logo gives your business an identity and depending on what your goal is for your business, investing in a trained, qualified and experienced graphic designer to help design a logo and visual brand for your business is only going to benefit your business in the long run.
Value
How much do you value your business? And how much value would a professionally designed logo give to your business?
Think about a really well known logo, such as Nike. Could you put a value on their logo? On the infamous swoosh, or tick? And if you had to make a guess, how much would you say it’s worth? Now my next question for you to think about is, do you think they paid that much to get the logo designed in the first place? Probably not.
The long game
This is where thinking about the long game comes in. What are your goals for your business? Do you have a brand strategy in place? Do you know where you want to be in a years time and 3 years time with your business? How well known do you want your business to be? How visible do you want it to be?
Thinking about all these questions may seem overwhelming, but taking your answers into account shows how invested you are in the growth of your business.
Alignment
This is something I have worked on myself and it took a good few months. I had the help of an amazing business coach too (I highly recommend checking out Kirsty Carden)! What I have learnt and found is that everything needs to be in alignment. So for example, if you’re wanting to have a professional looking business which is attracting your dream customers, then the visual brand for your business needs to be in alignment with everything else.
You need to take into account your business positioning within your market place, your dream customers and who they are really and your brand values as well. These all need to be reflected within your visual branding and some graphics designers, depending on their level of expertise may not even consider these important aspects.
Professionalism
Simply put, are you wanting your brand to look homemade or professional? The majority of clients who have come to me previously to get their logo designed have pretty much said the same thing; They did their logo themselves and as the business has grown they’ve realised that their business needs to look much more professional than what it does currently.
Depending on who you use, you could still end up with a homemade looking logo…
Importance
It’s time to look at things from a different perspective – how important is it that you have a professional looking brand identity for your business? In my professional opinion, it’s very important. As soon as someone comes into contact with your business, they are experiencing your brand so everything needs to be on point. You have seconds to grab a persons attention, so you want to make sure you’re making the right impression from the very beginning.
Path of least resistance
Yes, you probably could make life easier for yourself and go down the path of least resistance. You could either use a website such as Fiver and pay $5 for a logo design, or try it yourself using the likes of Canva or PicMonkey, but there’s only so much level of expertise you’re going to get access to that way. And if you’re not skilled in graphic design or logo design, it could be very difficult to design a logo yourself.
So why should you invest in using a professional graphic designer?
Save time and money
Working with a professional graphic designer is going to save you time and money. Rather than spending hours on a design yourself and it still not looking right, you can leave it up to an expert who can probably do it in half the time or less and create something extra special that is unique to you as well. I speak more about this here.
Get access to years of design experience
Having been in the design industry now for over 11 years, I have developed my own methodical design process and I suspect other experienced graphic designers have done the same thing. When you work with me, you firstly get access to that 11 years of experience and then some. You also get access to design knowledge and skills that have been accrued over time, which is going to benefit you even more.
You won’t need to rebrand within at least a few years
Again, if you create your own logo design or get a $5 logo, the likelihood is it will only last you so long. You will start to build up your business and after time, once your business becomes more well known within 1-2 years, you’ll realise like so many of my other clients, that your logo needs to look much more professional. You’ll probably need to rebrand your business, whereas using a professional designer from the beginning means you won’t need to rebrand for at least a few years.
Your logo is going to be professionally designed
I’ve had it in the past where a few clients have come to me for some print designs (eg leaflets, business cards, posters etc) and they’ve had their logo designed for $5. When they’ve given me a copy of their logo files to use within the designs, I’ve been shocked at what I’ve seen. There is a certain way to design a logo and the files I received showed the logos had either been designed in completely the wrong design program and/or in the wrong colour format, which can be detrimental to your logo and any future online and offline materials in terms of colour consistency.
So, how much does a logo design cost?
A logo design can cost anything from $5 right up to millions of pounds!
Here are a few things I would take into consideration when investing in a professional designer and seeing the value in your return on investment:
Education – what level of education do they have in Graphic Design?
Personal Development – how much have they invested in developing themselves personally and professionally to ensure they offer a high level of service?
Experience – what previous experience have they had? Have they worked with other small business owners and sole traders? Have they had any experience of working with bigger brands? Do they have any design agency experience? And how long have they been designing for?
Authority and value – have they been featured on any influencer’s platforms? Do they regularly publish valuable blogs? Have they done any radio or podcast guest appearances? Have they done any public speaking?
Niche – are they a jack of all trades or do they specialise in certain areas of graphic design?
